Question for Shaw & Dennison "Cinema Novo"

Under what conditions was Cinema Novo born? How did Brazilian social and cinematic climates come together to form this movement in Brazilian film? What purposes did Cinema Novo serve, and how is it regarded today? Compare and contrast other similar cultural film movements from the same time period (i.e. Italy, France).

Cinema Novo literally means New Cinema, and thus the movemets intention to break with the past and ring the changes is made explicit, even in its title. It was born out of a reaction to the failure of the Vera Cruz project, a dissatisfaction with the 'alienating' chanchada, and frustration at US domination of the Brazilian box office.
It is often regarded as Latin America's response to Italian Neo-Realism and the French Nouvelle Vague, but while these were strong influences, seen for example in preference for small production teams, location shooting, non-professional actors, and collaborative financing strategies, the proponents of the movement did not share common aesthetics, unlike Italian neo-realists, and unlike Nouvelle Vague they were not initially brought together and inspired by a desire to modernize domestic production or the film industry.
